Cosmo and I both love music. As a talented singer-songwriter, music is a big part of his day and he’s constantly exposing me to new artists. Although I am not a performer, music has always been a big part of my life, and I enjoy both playing (guitar, violin, ukulele) and listening to music. Recently, Cosmo asked me what my favorite Pink Floyd song was. My answer? “Comfortably Numb.” Cosmo revealed in turn that his favorite Floyd song is “Fearless.” It’s a less well-known tune which appeared as the third track on their sixth studio album, Meddle.
It’s a beautiful song and worth a listen! Here’s a link:

The lyrics are instructive for so many situations in life… contemplating a career change, or a major life change…divorce? A move? Retirement? All are usually met with a substantial dose of terror by most people. This fear can result in paralysis, leading to years spent in an unhappy career, relationships or marriages that no longer fit, or lingering on in an unfulfilling work situation.
“You say the hill’s too steep to climb…climb it
You say you’d like to see me try, climb it
You pick the place and I’ll choose the time
And I’ll climb that hill in my own way
Just wait a while for the right day
And as I rise above the tree lines and the clouds
I look down, hearing the sound of the things you’ve said today…”
Several years ago, I found myself in a job that no longer fit my skills and talents. Because of this mismatch, I began to doubt my own abilities. A coach helped me to see that a change in environment was needed and that I had grown beyond what this position could offer me. Although I had to get beyond the fear of uprooting my family and moving to a new city with all the disruptions that can bring, it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made, both personally and professionally. I learned the lesson that the only way to disrupt fear is FAITH. One must trust that although the hill seems too steep to climb, all that is needed to start a new journey is to take the first step. I can honestly say that my relationship with a coach was the kickstart I needed to reinvigorate my career and find a new direction, and my experience has in turn inspired me to coach and mentor others.
“…And every day is the right day/…Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart/And you’ll never walk alone.”
